Don't get a website...
Until you have read this very important and totally FREE advice
Seriously - This would take me about ten years to tell you all I have learnt about this very important topic. So instead I will give you the basics and you will pick it up yourself in time I can guarantee that.
How many websites are in existance today? No one actually knows the exact figure and probably never will, but it is estimated that there are currently over 600 billion websites out there on the world wide web.
So what chance have you got of getting yours on the first couple of pages of a search engine such as Google? Well, surprisingly enough, much higher than you might think. In my time I have probably created over 60 websites and to date every single one of them got a page one result. So how is it done?
There are numerous amounts of factors involved in creating a website in a way that it will get good search rngine results.
Search engines have extremely clever robots that crawl the internet on a daily basis looking for websites and logging them in correct order from the information they find within the sites. The more content (text) your site has and the quality of that contenet is vital in allowing the seacrh engines to index your site and work out what it is about.
All web building programs will allow you to enter text that lays 'behind the scenes' from your website. These are mainly your 'Page Titles', 'Page Descriptions' and 'Keywords'.
Let's start with your page titles:
FREE INTERNET MARKETING ADVICE
A lot of people make the mistake of leaving these to read 'Home Page', 'About Us' etc. The page titles are one of the first things the search engines read to work out what your site is about. In this case on the right I made a website for a Limousine Technical support company.
Keywords:
Keywords are the next important step. Don't make the mistake of entering hundreds of words associated with your service or products; your keywords have to reflect the content of the page you are posting them to. Make sure whatever keywords you use are also written somewhere at least once on that page.
For an example, some of the keywords I have used for this page are 'Website, optimization, page titles, marketing' to name but a few. You will find also that these words appear on this page in several places. The search engines can then pick up on the keywords on your page and direct the customers looking for, in this case 'Website optimization'
But be careful not to 'Over keyword' your website as this can do more damage than good. Just be sensible with it and the search engines should like your site.

WEBSITE OPTIMIZATION - GETTING YOUR WEBSITE NOTICED
Who are you targeting?
Think seriously who your customers are likely to be. Are you trying to sell your business just to people in your town, county, country, or are do you have a service or product that will appeal worldwide?
Let's say you sell Carpets in Nottingham. Anyone typing 'Carpets' into Google will get roughly 15,500,000 results. Wow! There's no way you're going to get seen anywhere near page one here!... Ok, let's now presume the customer has narrowed his search down by clicking on the UK search results for 'carpet suppliers' only. Now this takes the results down to an amazing 1,550,000; this is increasing your chances of being seen greatly. Now let's say the customer types in 'Carpet suppliers in Nottingham'. He is now confronted with just 25,400 results. This may sound a high number but trust me, 25,400 is a very low result and the chance of your site coming up on page 1 or 2 if you had your page titles set to 'Carpet Shop - Nottingham - UK' and had keywords on your site such as 'Carpet suppliers in Nottingham'. In fact if you look closely at the results there are actually only two carpet suppliers in Nottingham on Page one of Google for this result and that's because they both have correct page titles and keywording. So out of 25,400 results, if you set up a carpet shop in Nottingham you would definitely without fail get a page one result if keyworded correctly.
If a majority of your business is going to be local, then keep your keywords and page titles and description local. Put your address or at least your town and county on your home page somewhere so the search engines will put you into the correct local section for whatever service you provide.
A mobile hairdresser in Essex doesn't want a customer in Glasgow, so her site would have 'Mobile Hairdresser' and 'Essex' in the page titles, keywords and description and so anyone looking for a hairdresser in Essex should get directed to her site.

Giving the page titles as 'Limousine Technical Support - Engine Problems - Wiring Problems - Limo Tec' means that any search into Google for American Limousine technical or engine or wiring advice will get this website a page one hit. In fact this website comes up as Number one, page one in lots of Limousine technical search terms.
You need to name the page titles for every page of your site, but ensure that the page title reflects the information of its corresponding page.
So a wedding dress website having one page of white wedding dresses could title that page 'White wedding dresses', but then on another page where they show pink gowns, they could title the page 'Pink wedding dresses' That way anyone searching for a wedding dress in pink is quite likely to be drawn not just to your website but to the page showing pink wedding dresses.

If you are looking to appeal to a much wider audience, then unless you are providing a service or goods absolutley unique to you then you are going to have your work cut out. But don't panic, as it is not impossible. Out of the millions of websites out there, very few are optimized properly so do a good job on yours and you could queue jump very quickly!.
More ways to boost your website rating:
Create a 'links' page on your site and do link exchanges with other sites:
It is extremely important though that you only exchange links with sites that are related in some way to your kind of business. Don't link to a site about motorbikes if your site is about your dog sitting business.
Also try and link to established websites. The higher the other site's rating, the better the link exchange will be seen by the search engines.
Search engines believe that if you have many sites linking to your site then your site is of importance.
Get a link to your website wherever you can. Visit and join forums that discuss your kind of products and services and join in with the discussions. Most forums will allow you to leave a link to your business somewhere. Get added to as many search engines and business directories, shopping directories as you can too. Most of them are free. Never pay for a directory unless you can be sure that they receive a huge amount of traffic.
One sure fire way of getting right to the top of the search engines is by sponsored listings. You basically bid for every click to your site on particular search terms. You set the limit on what you want to spend a day, be it £1.00 or £1,000. You then bid for keywords and phrases of your choice to get your site ranked within the sponsored listings on the first couple of pages of the Google search engine.
